I have tried to explain the importance of saving to them but they don't get it and each year at Christmas it is the same "we don't have any money"... Yeah but you have enough for cigarettes, scratch tickets and booze. If they could put $5 away per week, only $20 per month they would have over $200 to buy the kids presents.

Some people just don't care and in this case they are on welfare so it is easy come easy go with no thought of the future beyond today. It is such a sad broken record.
This mentality drives me bonkers also. I am poor but I do save money. Make good financial decisions and spend frugally all the time.

We have one tv but I waited in line to buy it for $200 on Black Friday. I would have never paid what they sell them for the rest of the year.

Another thing I do is always ask for a discount. I don't buy anything without it being discounted.

I think there is some confusion in the difference between poverty level income and living in poverty or being poor. People living in poverty or being poor don't live how you describe your living situation

He is ordered to pay child support. I could pay off my awd fully loaded 18 month old Durango on his arrears.
How do you make someone pay something they are determined to my pay? This is where the laws need to be stricter, punishments enforced and the system needs to proactively collect everyway possible.

Right but only because I am fortunate to come from a wealthy family that instilled the importance of good credit and making wise financial decisions.

The government considers my salary to be poverty when supporting two minor children.

Go to a poor inner city where the violence is through the roof and the families are broken. Go in the house and watch don't you see:

- Big screen TV
- Every latest technology gadget available
- Every latest toy available
- The refrigerator is stacked with groceries and junk food
- They are driving a decently running car
- Look in the closet and you will see a lot of latest fashion items
- They have high speed internet access, cable, a cell phone and probably a house phone

That's poverty ??

That kind of lifestyle usually requires either illegal activity (working for cash under the table, dealing drugs, etc) and/or enablers (boyfriends, parents, baby daddies) who provide unreported resources.

One common way to achieve this is to live with a boyfriend or baby daddy without getting married. Getting married would bring the spouse's income into the calculation, making that kind of lifestyle out of reach - so there is huge DISincentive for these people to marry.

Housing subsidies do free up enough cash to allow some of these people to have cable or satellite TV, but not enough to pay for the whole package above.

I also paid half of the purchase price in cash from my savings. I am fortunate to have good credit even though I do not have a high salary.

Housing subsidies are like non existent in my state. So I have no idea how people are able to live high on the hog on welfare.
