One of my sisters owes money all over town. She is in serious debt and all her credit cards were cancelled. Her FICO score is around 450. (Very low)
Even though she is broke, owes thousands of dollars and has creditors/bill collectors calling her every day, she still decided to go on a week long vacation. Her plan is to rent a car and stay at nice hotel.
I told her that it is nearly impossible to rent a car and stay at nice hotels without a credit card. She says they will do a cash deposit. I read that even that is not good enough because if you do a cash deposit they will check your credit. Seeing she owes thousands of dollars to multiple organizations, banks, utilities and credit cards, won't they reject her?
Any experience trying to rent a car without a credit card and with terrible credit?
Cash Paper Bills No, But Cash as in Debit Card yes, They will Debit the entire amount plus a few hundred more when she takes the car, And refund back the difference few days after the rental is returned. The will often on "Cash" make you take there overpriced insurance, or require you to show proof of insurance.
Hotel the same Cash/Debit for hundreds more then the room.

Can't be done as far as I know.
Your sister has a real problem. She can cure it, but only she can cure it. You can't help much.
It's a mental issue manifesting itself as a financial issue.

She told me she does not have a regular bank debit card or even a traditional bank account because she wrote so many bad checks and having money in a bank account will open the funds to garnishment. She lives on cash and prepaid debit cards.
You can absolutely rent hotel rooms and cars without credit cards - as flyonpa said, you can use a debit card. The deposit is generally not any more than if you use a credit card - the difference is that a hold is placed on your actual cash rather than your available credit. Before I had cards, I traveled regularly with just a debit card. It took some research on my part to call locations directly to find out what the deposits were, and making sure they would take a debit card, but it's completely doable.
Your sister's ability to travel is completely separate from whether or not she SHOULD. Honestly, as long as your name isn't on any of her debts, and she doesn't owe money to you, then just keep out of it. Just not worth the stress you'll cause yourself.

It depends on the place. In many places they will not allow this, so it is imperative to call in advance. Of course I'm leaving aside the question of why anyone is spending so much $$$ on travel while being behind on their bills...
No need for the caps emphasis, we were responding at the same time.
To a retailer, there isn't much difference between a prepaid debit card and a bank debit card. They function the same way - as long as the $$ is available on the other end, good to go. So if she has loaded enough $$ to cover the deposits onto the card, she will be fine.
