I'm thinking about getting a second credit card. The Discover Card application form wants my SS#, and yearly income. I don't feel comfortable about giving this out. Is there any way around this? I've had a Visa for years, and have always paid promptly. If these companies would share information, it would spare the customer a lot of hassle.

This is a joke right?
Every single credit application for decades at least makes the same basic requests; SSN and income are at the top of that list. For one thing your credit reports/scores are listed under your SSN.
If you don't want to provide the information then don't apply for a credit card, or find someplace that uses different methods of evaluating worthiness.
Obviously, they feel they need to assess you on their own. However, contrary to what they tell you, and contrary to what people generally accept, they don't necessarily need your SSN. Apparently it used to be much easier to get a card without it. Someone who used to work in the business told me that one reason they used to demand it was because it enabled them to track you down more easily if you disappeared on them.
Of course, now, the real reason they want it has probably become more so that they can connect all your information and sell it to others.

Or the real reason they want it is to pull your credit history
They will run a credit check using your SS# and set your credit limit based upon that and your current annual income. A credit card provides an unsecured loan so the lender must evaluate the borrower and the risk to take.
You will not get a credit card if you don't give up your name, DOB, SS number and income. They need that info to run a credit check and determine your credit line.
