I have an unusual situation where I'm diversifying by NOT going into real estate. My parents own somewhere north of 20 rentals, so whatever inheritance my sister and I receive will almost certainly be in the form of multiple rental units. Other than that, they own their own business (actually they own 4 businesses, plus the building they operate out of), so anything else we receive would probably come from that.

So I'm sticking primarily with stocks/bonds. For now, primarily stocks.

I have been collecting firearms all my life. I didn't know it, but almost all of my firearms have appreciated an average of 6% a year. About 3 years ago I started with PM's and so far the last year there has been a 20% + rise in value.

I was 100% invested in tech stocks until the spring of 2000. 100% out in the spring of that year and then a year later reinvested in only mutual funds and ETF's, then in the fall of 2007 was 100% out again. Since then I have been in and out and about 2 years ago out completely again.

I will make further investment decision going forward as soon as there is an obvious November winner.

I was never lucky with stocks. Bonds comprise a savings part of my portfolio, while I am overexposed to private equity as a business angel. I have too little experience at stock market, but my business experience and some "gut feeling" help me with seed investments. Thus, answering the topic question, I moved beyond stocks once I started investing
