Two days ago I called my credit card company to get statements for 2014 which were not available online anymore. I was rudely told it was impossible, she would not transfer me to a supervisor or other manager that could help. I told her that in the online FAQ, it said to call her customer service number to request older statements. She would not budge.
I called this afternoon, got a different rep, and my statements are in the mail on the way to me.
That said, I will go ahead and start downloading them in case I ever need them again. Good suggestion.
For this very reason I always get paper copies of bank statements, credit card statements, brokerage statements and important utility bills and keep them for ten years. If I am still with the same bank or brokerage or credit card, its stays with me till I quit them and 10 years have passed.
It has saved me money and aggravation over the past 3 decades. Computers crash, files go missing but the paper statements in a binder stays forever.

Well...till your house burns down or you keep some personal records at work and your workplace is completely destroyed. Both of those things have happened to me.

For some important records like tax returns and contracts I have pdf copes stored online. This is just another layer of security. One can have paper statements and also have online access to past statements. But the older the date is, it is more likely you will have a paper one and not the online one.
Houses can burn down, I can die - anything can happen. But how common is that. Especially if you have a fireproof safe.
That makes no sense. If you are storing PDFs online responsibly, with a reputable cloud storage or cloud backup service, then it would take something close to the destruction of civilization or gross dereliction on your part for your online copies to be lost.

Wish that were true but life is not so simple. Cloud storage companies can close down or go bust ( eg. Copy.com) or can get hacked or files can go missing. Sometimes you accidentally delete a folder on your computer that has the files and is set to synchronize with the cloud back up and before you know the cloud deletes it too. Adobe acrobat is the format that is the standard today, but who knows what that will be twenty years later.
I have had a PC for a long time since 1989 and an internet since 1990 ( before the advent of the WWW). I know that nothing is 100 % foolproof. So I prefer to have paper backups of important documents. I have no problems if others want to rely on the cloud only. Fine with me. Some will learn of their folly after they are burnt once.

Yes, I had my house fire before pdfs and electronic documents were in common use. I have tax docs stored online now, too, as well as on stored media at home.

When did that happen without customers knowing about it so that they could switch to a different provider?

This is the exact same thing as throwing out a folder of records that you thought included only old utility bills but also included some tax forms. Paper = Online.

When has online statement file formats changed without a means available to convert?
It is your responsibility as an account owner to maintain the records indefinitely if you so wish. Banks and or brokerage firms are required by law to keep the records for a set period of time typcially 7-9 years. If this time has been exceeded its your responsibility not the financial institution to keep said records.

Factual but irrelevant. You did not read the post. I expected that I would be able to retrieve a statement from this past April.
