Some years back I received a bigger federal refund than what I filed for. I was using 1040EZ. It is a very small difference, like $200.

Does this mean the IRS people are actually going over the numbers without opening a formal audit?

The more likely explanation is that you either didn't add correctly or you didn't read the instructions carefully.

I think the IRS match forms such as your W2, 1099's estimated taxes paid ect and found out you made a clerical error and thus overpaid your taxes.

Yes, they go over your tax forms. If nothing looks suspicious, then you don't get audited.

I've received a check for a tax credit I didn't take but was eligible for.

Yes. The IRS also computes your taxes for you, and guesses what you owe. Sometimes they make mistakes, but as long as it's in your favor, no big deal.
