Rough rule of thumb. Save 15% of your income. Thus go back to say age 20 and figure out what 15% would be today. Let's say it earned 8%. Going forward you would continue at least 15%. This is very rough. You also have savings for other items and do not count these.

My comments:

At that income level, his 401(k) should be maxed. That $1K/month of "savings" needs to be invested once he's built up an emergency fund. It's going to take 20 years of high savings rate and some good fortune with how it's invested to catch up.
