Anyone who's recently eaten at a Sonic Drive-In may have had their credit or debit card number stolen and put up for sale online, Krebs on Security reports. It's currently unclear how many restaurants or customers were affected, but Sonic serves approximately 3 million customers per day at nearly 3,600 locations in 45 states, according to Bloomberg.

For many years it has been known that restaurants can double swipe a card or copy of card when used to pay a bill.

That is why I do not use a card for restaurants. I always pay cash in restaurants for both the bill and the tip.

I used usually use my card only if necessary anywhere. For local transactions I use cash.

When traveling I use cash a lot and credit card sparingly. I've had my card compromised more than once while traveling for things like gas and hotel rooms.
