I've been an independent contractor the last year...simple question when I file my 1099..can I just file that or do I have to go through the whole online tax form process?

This is my first time filing as an independent contractor, I normally do taxes online, I don't know If I can do a 1099 online alone or do I need go to through my normal steps when I use H & R block online?

If it is a 1099 you have received as a contractor, then you don't file it unless taxes were withheld. You include the indicated income wherever it may go on your 1040 return and other schedules. You should have been paying quarterly income taxes if no taxes were withheld, as well as paying FICA. Start here.

I think you should. You may need to complete a Schedule C to attach to your 1040, to calculate your net taxable income and not the gross income reported on the 1099. I don't know if you can use a 1040ez with an attached schedule.

as an independent contractor you likely received a 1099-MISC from the company or companies you did work for. Those 1099's should be totaled and included on your 1040, Schedule C as gross revenue from your trade or business. Then deduct what expenses you have for the production of that income to get to your taxable income from your trade or business. You'll also have to pay self-employment tax so fill out Schedule SE.

Get TurboTax or some other software package to help you through it, or go to a professional if you don't think the software is something that's right for you.

Good luck.
