Free credit reports
Has anyone used any of the "free" credit report sites? Which one is the best? Are they really free? I just went to freecreditreports.com and they ask for your credit card number. Says it wont be used during the "free trial period".

yes, i have used the site that FCF mentioned --- annualcreditreport.com --- and yes, it really is free --- you can get 1 report from each of the 3 agencies --- you will have to pay if you want your credit score though...

A good strategy if you want to "pseudo" monitor your credit is to order one of the bureau reports every 4 months. TransUnion, Experian and Equifax.
Since you entitled to one free each year from EACH of them....order TransUnion now...then Experian 4 months from now...then Equifax 4 months after that. Repeat each year....this way you don't have to pay.
It's not the most precise monitoring (there are pay services for this) but at least you can see if your ID has been hijacked/any improper reporting.

Beware of the .com credit report sites. Mrs. Bowie used one and we ended up with a phantom charge on our credit card for some monitoring service that she didn't even realized she'd signed up for. She used to build e-commerce web sites, so if the .com site was able to slip that sneaky fee past her, they must have been quite slippery.
Stick with http://www.annualcreditreport.com/ which is the site authorized by the Federal Trade Commission.

The site mentioned is fine if you want to keep a very generalized notion of what your credit history is like. I'd recommend NOT going with that and looking into a one-time or repeat buy-in at MyFICO.com.
Great site: I can keep up daily with my FICO score, report discrepancies in my report online and generally keep up with it on a day/week/monthly basis.
With so much info floating around online, I don't think that just a yearly check of ones credit is enough. I'd especially recommend monitoring if you're going to soon be buying a car, home or anything that would require a hard-pull of your credit report from any of the big three.
And for those who are just credit junkies and like to know everything and anything about how to beat the system:
