I get the advantages of a CU. BUT how do those of us who are retired, no military affiliation (except USAA - best thing I got from my first marriage was a great cat and access to USAA), or any other way into a Credit Union that I've been able to discover.
I'm all for online banking and the ONLY reason I stay local is to get my safe deposit box. (PS - it's First Citizens. I wouldn't agree with that survey for a minute. They are worse than useless.)
ETA I'm now in Raleigh NC if that makes a difference.
Many credit unions are community based now. As long as you live or work in the area, you qualify for membership. All the big ones in AZ are open like that.
Desert Schools (Desert Financial now) didn't get to over $4B in assets by only accepting school employees.

Most CU's these days just require you to live, work or worship in a certain area.
You understand that was a Company problem, not a Method (online) problem.. right?
Find the right Company and the Method doesn't matter. I'm another USAA member who's never seen a USAA employee nor touched any USAA property, zero complaints over 18 years.
Online will never be as good as being to be able to show up in front of the person causing problems. It's very easy to blow someone off over the phone, a lot harder when they're looking you in the eye.

As I've said, I've not been in a branch in 20+ years. I've not had to deal with anyone that is "causing problems" so have never had to worry about being blown off over the phone.
My "bank" is Navy Federal Credit Union and it just seems to work. Never any issues.
Just ran across a past article in Consumer Reports, but probably still valid. None of the major banks scored well, the highest being Chase with a score of 81. But all these local banks did better.
Avoid banks. Except USAA, if you can get with them! Use credit unions.

First Bank 88
First Citizens Bank 88
Zions Bank 86
UMB 85
Bank of the West 85
And Alaska USA Credit Union with a whopping 92.
I think its starting to be well known that the major banks have the worst customer service. I have a major bank account but bank with USAA & NavyFed.
I have a bank account ( small one) at a bank very close to my house for convenience , only reason. I have thoroughly been thinking of closing it.
All other banking is done at my credit union.
Has been for many many years, in fact all but 4 years of my life, when I lived in an area that strangely had no credit union, but the banks at that time paid well on interest like a CU does today.
Now they are for crap.
CU is the only way to go.
No wonder the Alaska CU mentioned in OP s post was the highest.
