The Macys-izaton of America
Is anyone else pissed at the Macys-ization of our malls? First it was Jordan Marsh, then Filenes in the Boston area that disappeared. In Chicago they gobbled up Marshall Fields. Will Macys be all that's left? Their merchandise is cheesy, the bottom of the spectrum. We're being robbed of our choices when it comes to department store shopping. Not to mention our memories of Marshall Fields or Filenes. Must we all look the same, dressed in shiny, poor quality Macy's duds?

I personally don't see anything wrong with Macy's.
They just took over where Famous Barr was here in the midwest... I don't know about everywhere else.
I like Macy's though, they have some awesome red shoes in sale right now!

I'd still take Macy's over Wal-Mart ANYDAY! Here in Scranton, we now have two brand-new Macy's (formerly Kauffmann's), and I can see that the employees there tend to be much better-treated than they are at Wal-Mart. I refuse to patronize a store that utilizes predatory pricing to shut-down Main Streets across America! I'm actually thrilled to see that "Wake-Up Wal-Mart" is now airing television commercials here in Scranton in which current and former Wally World employees are speaking out against the company's anti-employee policies and beliefs. Sam Walton truly would be rolling over in his grave to see such suffering in the name of the "Almighty Dollar."
P.S. I work at Lowe's, and we're slowly-yet-surely bound down that same path, as our new store manager (the kazillionth one in the two years I've been there), won't even let us close the store on time on some evenings to keep us there past our 10 PM shifts to try to "make budget." Corporate greed in this nation is getting out of hand; I'll be hitting Downtown Scranton this year to do all of my Christmas shopping! I may be paying more, but I'm not putting fat payroll bonuses into the pockets of greedy big-box managers.

Macy's took over Robinson-May in CA. I have a credit card, so I go every now and again, but I can never find anything I like. Or if I like it, I won't pay those prices. I did get a really nice robe there that was worth every over priced penny.

Macy's bought the Foley's here in Texas. We already had some Macy's around but now....... ugh. I had always liked Foley's but in recent years they started to slide. There is a brand new one right by me in a nice upper end mall and the Foley's was plain and hardly had any stock. Much less workers. I bet you could only find 2-3 workers on one floor. I seriously one day found out WHY people steal from them. If I can walk around 1/2 of one store level and not see one entire person to check me out.......... sorry. So of course these smash and grabs are going to hit them (something happening alot in some area malls at the large dept stores). Anyway, I think it has to do w/ Foley's cutting back to get ready to sell. Lower the overhead to make the profit bigger. In doing so now they have lost customers. I guess Macy's thought everything was okay in these stores and has left everything the same. One day it's gonna be too late.

I love Macy's! I haven't found their brands (including Calvin Klein and Liz Claiborne) to be "poor quality duds". They have fabulous shoes and jewelry, linens and china and just everything - love it!

Couldnt agree more. Well- it seems alot of the quality stores are less visible. I loved Lord and Taylor and they even shut down in the Boca Mall- why?- guess not enough business-
Filene's is gone now too? how scary if Wal-mart is all that's left. That place is a disgrace, with how they treat their workers.

Good post Scranton. Wal-mart had their managers hiring (and illegally filling out medical forms) for federally disabled employees- so the co would save $$$ not giving them health coverage- this is illegal- and there was a huge class action lawsuit. Any purchase from Wal-mart supports 3.00 a week workers oppressed in China- and Walmart is running amok in the corporate greed department. It is a disgrace. Wish people could boycott it but too many are concerned about saving 10.00; I would rather spend more money at Kroger in a nice clean store. Thanks for the post Scranton!
