I got gift card to Starbucks at for Christmas, and I rather have the cash to contribute to my debt payments. Would you happen to know if I went to Starbucks, can they give me cash back? Have you tried to do this?

There are websites that will buy Gift Cards for about 50-60 cents on the dollar.

(They resell them for 80-90 cents on the dollar, and make there $'s on the spread)

But they are not going to buy low dollar cards, not worth it, most have minimum for $25-50 for a buy offer.

You'd probably have better luck selling them, at a small discount, to someone you know, a coworker perhaps.

You have ONE gift card? That $25 will do much to solve your debt problem? Use it to buy whatever you might be able to use at the Starbucks (instead of at a grocery store. If you don't drink coffee, try non-coffee based drinks), thank the giver, and forget it.

Compared to your debt, I imagine the amount on the card is an insignificant amount. As noted, you can sell them for part of the value, or you can gift it to someone else and put the money you were going to spend on a gift toward your debt.

Some supermarkets have actually these gift card machines where you put the card in and the machine gives you cash back for a small fee. Otherwise there’s the online sites as someone else suggested. But for one card I’d just use it for breakfast or lunch items then at Starbucks if you’re not a coffee drinker. Some of the larger stores have quite an assortment of goodies.

Cardpool will pay you cash (in the form of a check) for your gift card. You can also swap it for an Amazon card, or many others, and get slightly more money.

You must be wealthy if you don't think $12 isn't a lot of money. Every single spare coins & dollars go towards my debt payment. This is the reason I am so close to having it all paid off and most people are still in debt.

I've seen people sell gift cards on ebay and my neighborhood listserv. Do you have Nextdoor?

And uh, no, even those of us who are not wealthy think you should go to so much effort for $12. Think about it...you'd only reclaim $12 and would essentially be throwing away the other $13 so that some opportunisitic company could make a profit off your misfortune. That's actually how people get into debt in the first place.

If you really don't want to use the card, buy coffee for your coworkers (including the gift giver). By paying it forward you are likely to buy a little positive karma. Then let it go.
