The two banks that are practical for us are PNC and B of A. We have accounts at both.

I am finding PNC to have substantially better customer service. Faster, more polite, quicker resolution without transferring you all over the place. I am curious whether other people have found the same thing.

Considering switching over except PNC lacks a reasonably accessible office in Downtown Detroit right now (and seemingly fewer ATMs in the areas we frequent)

If you have experience with both banks, have you found customer service superior at one or the other?

Compared to BOA or Wells Fargo practically anyone has better customer service. They are ok if you never need anything and just do automated functions on the web. If you ever need customer service from BoA it usually involves dealing with obstinance and incompetence until you file a CFPB complaint. That is what I ended up doing with BoA when dealing with my deceased mother mortgage after they literally told me they would not obey the law (accept a small estate affidavit) over the phone.

Needless to say I'd keep my money under my mattress before I'd trust it to BoA. The trademark of a bad company isn't that they make mistakes. It's that they refuse to fix them and tell you to try and make them.

I would consider using an online bank or accounts with an online broker. You should be able to deposit checks with a smart phone app and get cash at free ATMS. I would keep PNC as it is good to have two banks incase you have an identify theft problem at one.

I had forgotten about Chase - There actually is a bank worse than B of A or Wells Fargo. Chase is the evil empire.

B of A is a lot more convenient because there are branches and ATMs everywhere. PNC not so much.

Those accounts with so called "free" ATM use aren't..

Use an online bank for 90% of what you do, keep a free checking account with PNC or BofA just to use ATMs. I can't remember the last time I set foot in a bank, or needed to talk to someone to actually get customer service, honestly.

I don't know much about Detroit, but if they have 7-Eleven's there than you have a free PNC ATM at every one of those locations.

PNC reimburses a certain amount of ATM fees per month depending on what kind of account you have.

I'm not sure what you mean by this, but there are a number of banks that really do free ATM withdrawals. It's not a myth.
