I would think if it was legit, I'd have heard by now.

OP you could go to your financial institution and request a letter of notary stating the notary has met you ( or know s you), has verified your DL and SS card. That ( with NO copies of either document) could be mailed to Cap one.

If that's not"good enough" then, yeah let em close it.

I refuse to send my, or copies of, my DL and or SS card.

Heck when I go in for surgery, IF the hospital needs to check my ID, and they want to scan/copies it, I refuse. Never had a problem before.

They DO need to verify age to be sure card holder is over 18 .

Best of luck...if I get such a notice, I'll call them on it, and report back here.

You can't think of any scenario where there are legitimate reasons the OP is being asked to provide this...and you aren't?

It seems like there may have been fraudulent attempts to use the card and they want to be sure the person using it is the cardholder. A quick search online indicates that's the case, when Capital One cardholders are being asked to submit driver's licenses, SS cards, etc.

OP, I would call and ask for the fraud department to see what's going on. If they're trying to protect your card from fraudulent use, I'm not sure why you'd want to draw a line in the sand.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news:

But you know what?

There may be TWO cards on Cap One accounts under his name and SS number.

In other words his ID have been stolen, and CAP One has now 2 accounts with the same name and SS number.

Therefore, to determine who has the right, and to protect Cap One and the REAL person, they shut his card down until he can PROVE he IS the REAL person holding that name and SS NUMBER.

contact Cap one and ask if that is the case. Then find out where their nearest branch is, and ask ifa notary public letter of verification of ID they would accept.

Then he needs to file a police report.

He needs to get one or all three free annual credit reports, andseeif there are any open account s he did not open.
Then he needs to contest those accounts andnotify the creditor that is NOT his account.
He needs to immediately FREEZE his credit at all three bureau s. Make sure he writes down the info and locks it up so he can unfreeze when he needs to use his credit!

He may very well have to prove by showing his DL and SS card plenty of time s till it all gets straightened out.

I once had my cc company call me and ask if I had charged two tickets to Tahiti and Bora Bora??

I said that I only WISHED that I've always wanted to go there, but emphatically NO I had not.
That started a while chain of ID theft that Happened to me.

Best of luck in sorting it all out....

He currently has two CO ccs. He has access to his credit report everyday (Sales manager at car dealership). He just bought a house so no fraud present as we went over his credit reports extensively.

Fraudulent activity isn't always apparent to the cardholder. If someone is trying to use his card (and it doesn't need to be lost for this to happen), that's fraudulent activity you won't know about and it won't impact his credit reports. Asking for additional information is just a precaution.

I still think it would have been better to contact their fraud department to inquire about that, but I've had my own encounters with people attempting to use my card in other countries, and I never get offended by what the issuing bank is asking me to do.
