The day the bill comes in the mail I pay the bill. Never even look at due date. You will never be late then. The bill has to be paid once a month anyway.
I have everything budgeted, so I pay certain bills with certain paychecks. I get an e-mail from my cc companies that my statement is ready, and when I do I go right into the website and schedule the payment for the due date. That way it's done, but the mioney doesn't come out until I have the money in there to cover it.
Starting in 2010 the Federal laws on credit cards will be changed and they will be required to mail out the statements at an earlier date to allow the card holder more time to pay the bill. They will NO longer be allowed to raise the interest rate on past purchases. << There are exceptions to this one but I'm not sure what it is.
Call you card company and if you are a good customer and do not have a history of being late they will more than likely wave the late fee. Just don't make a habit of being late and they will work with you.
CREDIT CARDS ARE A BAD THING...I like to call them the scum of the earth.
I only get my mail once about every 5 weeks so I need to keep track of everything online. If I have anything on my credit card it gets paid right away.
Good tip Sandy. People need to be very careful with bills and statements. Also watch for incorrect charges.
I got dinged by this. I have a department store credit card, and every month the bill has been due on the 3rd. All of a sudden, this month it was due a week earlier! I'm sure they sent a notice with the bill (or even separately from the bill), but I never saw it. I tend to let mail pile up; anyone else do this? So this is a free public service announcement to please check the due dates every month, because those late fees can be bad.
I've also heard that American Express has done this.

This tactic is getting more prevalent. Another practice is to send the bill later and later, giving you only a few days to settle. They are hoping you will be late and they can raise the interest rate to the maximum.
I had my CC company try this one on me. The due date was the day after I got it. And it was mailed the day before. I noted this on the payment portion of the bill.
