Is the reason that your husband's work doesn't have direct deposit for his paychecks? I myself prefer credit unions over for-profit banks (especially the megabanks like Wells Fargo, Bank of America, etc.). Fortunately for me, my credit union has a branch less than a mile from my house, in the rare instance that I need to go there to deposit a check into the ATM.

We've been with BB&T for many years. They are generally okay. Their Bankrate Safe bank rating is a 3 (out of 5) so they are essentially middle of the road.
