I got a new credit card in the mail from my credit union. The accompanying letter said that my current credit card (with one credit card company) would be closed at the end of March and I need to start using this new credit card company instead. I don't think this is specific to me, but credit-union wide initiative.
I've often heard that closing a credit card can affect one's score negatively. Will my credit score be adversely affected since the CU is closing my credit card account?
If so, is there anything I can and should do about it (send a letter to the 3 major credit score companies, with a copy of what my credit union sent to me, explaining the situation so it is on file)?
This happens from time to time, one of my CU's did this about 3 years ago. They, the CU, apparently gets a better deal from another CC company, or change because it provides better service to CU shareholders (customers for those that don't understand CU's). I believe it was treated as a transfer on my credit report, not a closed account/new account.
Thank you both. In re-reading the info provided they have, indeed, "transferred" my account from MC to Visa. Glad to hear there'll be no negative credit score repercussion.
