I once heard medical bills don't show up on your credit report... not sure how true that is though.

Medical bills go to collections after 60 - 90 days, and yes it shows on your credit report.

I understand they show up on my credit report but I am wondering how much does it hurt your credit. Does it hurt like not paying credit cards and such?

Medical bills dinged my daughters bad enough that I have to co-sign for a vehicle loan, and she has paid all of them off except the hospital, which she is still making regular payments on.

Any unpaid bill reported to the credit reporting agencies have the same effect as an unpaid credit card bill.

The biggest reason for most bankruptcies is medical bills.

Medical bills will go to collection if unpaid and the collection will go into your credit report and will stay there for 7 years. Collection is a derogatory info that will continue dinging your credit score long after you pay if off. Once you pay it off it will say on the report that it's paid off, but will still show for 7 years. it can lower your score by as much as 100 points, at least that's what it did for me. My skyrocketed once it fell off.

Medical, or any other bills, have no negative effect on your credit as long as you pay what you owe.
If you are a deadbeat, regardless of who or what you don't pay, your credit report will reflect it.

This was years ago but a friend of mine had to clear up an old medical bill before his home loan would be approved... And yes it was on his credit report.
