P.S. I wanted an allowance like my friends, so I could choose my own clothes. But my parents refused, and said I was lucky I didn't have to buy clothes. I was planning on doing an allowance for my daughter though, and my sister did it with her daughters when they were teens. I like the allowance system, because I think it teaches kids how to budget their money.
I would still pay for educational expenses, though.
Girls - Clothes, Make-ups, Hair Appts, Teas, etc.
Boys - ER Visits, Gas, ER Visits, Milk, ER visits, socks/underwear, Got lucky and hurt himself at Lunch time so was able to make a normal appt.
I have 4 boys and 2 girls. And the above is typical, but one of my girls was as likely to end up at the ER and one of my boys spends a lot on clothes and jeep but it is his own $.
I saw some people mention allowance. We do pay one, based on chores. That way they aren't getting $ for free. They have to pay to go to the movies with friends or birthday presents for friends. If they want extra clothes above what we provide in the fall and spring they have to pay for that. They do learn how to budget and make choices about what is more important to them.
Just the girl toiletries alone will add up to big $$$$.
And I (a girl) played tons of sports, so the cost of my hair driers, mousse, hot oil treatments, shampoos, moisturizers, tampons, haircuts, pads, waxes, perfume, etc, wasn't made up on less sports equipment.
