Many colleges have their own group plans for students. Those can be quite inexpensive.

ditto the above - check with your school to see if they offer a group plan. Your mom is right. Even if you are not "wild," anything could happen and it's better to have the coverage.

Case in point. My oldest son, who's out on his own, was a passenger in a car wreck. He thought he was invincible, so why would he need health insurance? He ended up spending 5 days in the hospital and total cost exceeded $25,000. Car insurance ended up paying most of the bills, but he went through 8 months of demands for payment before it was settled. Health insurance would have taken care of the bills up front and the two insurance companies would have worked it out. Health insurance would have also covered the strep that he was infected with in the hospital.

Yep.

I was lucky to be covered under my step-mother's plan through her employer until I was 23, but I remember being offered it through the University for very reasonable rates.

OP: don't allow your coverage to lapse, or Murphy and his law might have it in for you. Medical bills are far and away the most common cause of personal bankruptcy.
