My husband never paid a $50 medical bill so it went into collections. Do I just pay off the collections or pay the hospital directly?

They sent $50 to collections?

I would contact the hospital about it first. They tend to be nicer than collections folks...

Collection company "owns" the debt in most such cases. If you pay the hospital they will mail that to the collection company as the collection company probably already gave the hospital $10 or less to try and hound it out of you...

The hospital has nothing to do with it, so just make it easier and let the collections folks have the money.

If somehow your payment gets lost before it gets to the collector, you're out $50.

Before paying, make sure they haven't messed with your credit reports. If they have, you need to ask for a delete letter to remove any derogatory information they may have placed. Once you've paid them, they'll have no incentive to remove it.

For medical bills, do not pay the collection agency! Pay the hospital directly, then dispute the collection with the credit bureaus.

You are correct that the collection agency owns the debt because they they buy these debts for 10 to 20 cents on a dollar. The hospital is out of the picture. I do not agree that if you mail the money to the hospital that they will send it to the collection agency. They will pocket that money and laugh like you never heard anyone laugh. It will be then up to you to fight to make it right. And you will lose.

$50? Sorry but my answer is to tell the collection agency what you think of them using words that are not allowed on this forum. What are they going to do......spend hundreds in legal avenues to collect $50?

If you wish to play Ms Honest you have to call the collection agency and ask them to make you an offer. Many times they say FU but sometimes they will say gime $30 and call it even. Hey they bought the debt for $5 to $10 so they are making out. If they play hard ball then say that is your final offer and FU then hang up. Your phone will ring back in less then 5 minutes.

If they went after you because of a $50 debt they really must be hurting!

Not true..! They will go after you for a penny, even if it costs them hundreds to do so...
Their theory is, let one sucker get away with something, then they all will try...
