Beware of Tanning Salons! WARNING
My daughter had a 6 month tanning contract where the salon had permission to pull $21 out of her account monthly. Two months ago in May,she decided she didn't want to tan anymore so she let them know on the 15th of the month (as they told her to) and signed a card to cancel. The next month came around they pulled money from her account. She complained and the clerk said she needed to let them know on the 14th of the month to give them a day to process the cancellation.(They didn't tell her this in advance, btw). So she tans for another month.
Then June14 comes around and she closed her tanning account again. The clerk sent the card to the owner and there is proof of this transaction. My daughter in July decided to close her checking account and go to a different bank. July 15 arrives and the tanning salon pulls $15 out of her closed bank account which reopens her account and causes an overdraft charge of $37.50.
The salon is only going to refund the $21 and not the o.d. fee. The clerk thinks this is wrong and won't give us the owners phone number. We have threatened to report this salon (it's a very well known franchaise) to the Better Business Bureau which I learned from the bank manager, can close down a business with two bad complaints. He said that TANNING SALONS ARE NOTORIOUS FOR THIS KIND OF BEHAVIOR
I am also aware that this company is struggling financially as are many businesses at this time. So buyer beware.
What else can we do?

Health clubs and tanning salons are known for these sorts of practices. Don't sign contracts at places like these. Just do business month to month if you can. And if they don't allow that then don't do it. If you died they'd still try to pull money out of that account until eternity.

The BBB can not close a business down.
That's a hoot if I've ever heard one!
Let me just go file complaints at random then...
Funny the bank manager would say that, because I find it ridiculous that a closed account can be reopened like that. Your bank might be in bigger trouble and have one less customer.
When I closed my business some years back, to keep more debits from coming out monthly, I closed the checking account AND it stayed closed! But, I wouldn't trust ANY bank over my credit union.

Sounds like many businesses are unethical anymore.

A bank reopened a closed account? If my bank did that I'd be raising Hell with every agency I could think of. And you can bet I'd tell them exactly where to put that OD charge....

I am betting your daughter's account was merely emptied of funds rather than actually closed. A bank account cannot be reopened if it is truly closed.

I was with her when it was closed. There was no more transactions going through. They both are at fault but there is proof that she did close her tanning account. Why did they pull more money from her????

This is a perfect example of why you should never sign up for automatic payments.

I'm amazed that people still use tanning salons.
I assume we're talking about the ones that raise your skin cancer risk and give you wrinkles?
Or is it one of those places where you get the spray on tan that turns you orange
Agree with Sterling Girl - I'd avoid automatic payments wherever possible. Particularly to these kinds of places

Banks can reopen accounts automatically if a transaction posts to it. When I worked for Bank of America this happened fairly often.
