Actually, most cars NOW are 5 years 60,000 miles or more on the power train. Only a few auto makers are lagging at 36,000 miles. Most of the Asian cars are 8-10 years and 100k miles.

However, you neglect to take in to account when she bought the car. Years ago, cars barely had a warranty at all. Considering the last Horizon rolled off the lines in 1990, I can imagine she was accurate in the 12,000 mile warranty.

The KOREAN companies (Hyundai, Kia) offer a limited 100k powertrain warranty. Honda, Toyota, and Mazda do NOT. For example:

Honda Limited Warranty Information*
  • Bumper-to-Bumper Limited Warranty (years/miles) = 3/36,000
  • Powertrain Limited Warranty (years/miles) = 5/60,000
  • Corrosion Limited Warranty (years/miles) = 5/unlimited
  • Accessory Limited Warranty - All Honda Genuine Accessories installed at the time of vehicle purchase are covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles.

Every Toyota Car, Truck and SUV is built to exceptional standards. And that's not idle boasting. We back it up with these Limited Warranty Coverages:Basic36 months/36,000 miles (all components other than normal wear and maintenance items). Powertrain60 months/60,000 miles (engine, transmission/transaxle, front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, seatbelts and airbags).Rust-Through60 months/unlimited miles (corrosion perforation of sheet metal).EmissionsCoverages vary under Federal and California regulations. Refer to applicable Owner's Warranty Information booklet for details.AccessoriesFor accessories purchased at time of the new vehicle purchase, the Toyota Accessory Warranty coverage is in effect for 36 months or 36,000 miles (whichever comes first) from the vehicle's in-service date, which is the same coverage as the Basic coverage of the Toyota New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

Everyone I know that used the cash for Klunkers got great deals from the dealerships as well. Most people got another $4000 or so off the price of the car under various other programs. Several people bought $15,000 cars for $7000 or less.
The program works great. My father-in-law just traded in a 2000 Ford Explorer and got a Nissan Altima Hybrid, $4,500 Cash-for-Clunkers rebate + another $3,250 manufacturer's rebate for a total of $7,750 off. I also have another friend that traded in a old Pathfinder and got a Scion xD (which is a pretty ugly car IMO). But the program ends this Monday, so better go this weekend if you want to take advantage of it.
