That depends on what you compare. I am paying lower taxes here in London than I did in New York City (and I actually get something for my taxes here, free healthcare etc), but if you compared Paris to Anchorage then yes they will be significantly lower in Anchorage.

Overall however it is true to say that taxes are generally higher in Europe than the US but it shouldn't be taken as always holding true.

You need to compare taxes and FEES. That is where so many countires and even states differ. That is why the cost of living can't just come from Taxes when comparing.Its so easy for them to increase fees.
