Hello!

Me and my wife and the kids are moving to USA Q1 2010, and I wonder, what are the requirements to get a credit card in USA? How does the credit history work?

We are moving here from norway, and taking the norwegian credit cards with us, would be quite some problem, since it would be really expensive and troublesome to pay the bills from US to Norway.

Is there a requirement of how long we sould have been living in the states, how long i have been working, or something, age requirements?

Thanks in advance, hopefully we will get some good answers!

Most banks regardless of size will push both their debit cards at you as soon as you open kind of bank account and their credit cards almost as easily. For some one relocating that ought to work out fine. Of course you will want to explore the "best deal" as cards vary widely in terms / fees. Once you have an sort of credit card and a US issued Tax Payer ID you will build a credit history in the US and getting other card that may be a better deal than those issues by your bank is relatively simple.

Your CC from your home country will prove the ability to make any payments in that country.

In the US it will be a different ball game to start with.

Go with CASH in hand when you are going to open a checking/savings account. Ask the person there before making any committment in regards to the availability of a CC.

Wells Fargo at one time had a "secure" credit card (unadvertised) which meant the person would have to deposit funds to guarantee the usage of a CC account. Example would be $1000 dollars or more. The money is on deposit as a guarantee up to the $1000 limit... and you in essence can be buying things instead of a Debit card against your checking account. The $1000 is NOT touched as you will be making the monthly payments with interest.

Now this deposit will be returned with interest after a yr or two upon showing your credit worth and a regular CC will be issued. The bank is not going to lose any money as you have the limit and they have the security money in hand....besides your paying the interest...better yet to pay of any purchases in full with the monthly statement.

Hope this little info helps. Steve
