My employer does not match at all... is this normal????
For me I guess I said - well if the company is not matching I do not understand the point of a company 401k. I can get a traditional IRA with anyone for free and not have to worry about them changing banks every year, or when I change jobs?
I am maxing out my Roth IRA, that is all I am doing right now, age 29 - 25k in there. we are trying to pay off the house.
My employer matches up to 1500, but unless you stay with the company at least 6 years, you lose the money it matched. I'm not staying here that long, so I'm not contributing as much as I would if I would keep the match. One hubby gets a job, we'll look into a roth or something.
I've always been very curious to see how I compare to others my age in terms of retirement savings. I don't feel great about how much I have saved considering how old I am but curious to compare to others who are willing to share.
I'm 41 and have about $130,000 currently in my 401k, with another $5,000 or so in an IRA.
I'm 42 and I have about 70k in my 401k, and about 50k in a separate stock portfolio. When I was in my 20's I did something really really stupid and that was to cash out when I quit my job to go traveling (so I missed the boom years of the 90's!). I'm trying to catch up by hoping I can turn that 50k into a million in the stock market
It's been so long since I'd checked my 401 balance, I'd forgotten my user ID & password. I have auto re-balancing set, so it does not need much maintenance.
Anyway, I'm 38 and it's sitting at $367K.
