We got a call yesterday, a sick ferret needed a blood transfusion. The poor dear had a blood sugar count of 10, 100 is good. Our vet knows we care for our kids, she said we were the first to come to mind. We were on the way to the vet with two donors when the vet called, the poor girl passed away in the night.

poor little ferret.....

what a cool thing to do .... i used to donate blood every 8-10 weeks or so, but had to lay off for a year or 2... my veins are getting to be REALLY hard to stick.....

i have thought about having bailey and dave as donors.... but i'm not sure that i could get them (bailey in particular) to sit still with needles in their legs long enough to do the job.....

Awwww...poor little girl!
Dylan's Grandfather, Chevy (who also belonged to me) was a doggie donor for the longest time. He would lay still for as long as it took to withdraw blood..almost as tho he knew it would be helping his fellow doggie pals.

That says a lot about you if vet was willing to call you and ask. I know vet here uses her dogs for transfusions when needed. Vet has to trust and know you well and animals to even think about it.

Hopefully not needed ever but nice to know you are known for taking care of your animals and vet has someone willing to help.

Our Doctor told us they would be under for the transfusion, our girls can not sit still for one minute. They only asked for one donor, I offered two to lessen any effects on our girls and to give a better chance for the ill one.
We talked to the woman who owned/cared for the little girl and she expressed her appreciation.

We had 2 ferrets yrs ago...passed at the ripe old ages of 7 and 8. I can't imagine them sitting still for a blood withdrawal!

Our oldest girl turns 10 in a few weeks, even she will not stay still. She is on prednisone for her low blood sugar. Our only boy 6 is nice and plump but also on pred, poor boy is blind and deaf but you would never notice.
The two girls that voluntered are Teddy 6 and Ginny 4. Nikki is just too small, barely a pound.
