I personally don't think pets should be gifts for a birthday or holiday. They tend to be spur of the moment thoughts that people get bored with after a while. It's a life time commitment that takes a good bit of time to decide if you're ready for.

Just my opinion of course, and I'm not saying you've not thought it through. I do think however that asking for one is better than someone giving a pet to someone though.
