I've always used the phrase not to describe a "look" in particular, but that a person, if they are in tune with their animal, will generally know when it's time.
Of course that includes the "quality of life" assessment that the author speaks about in this article.
When we went through this with our little maltipoo a couple of weeks ago, I remember having a conversation with my dad where I said, in these words, "I think it's time". Thinking back on it, it has been the same with all of my animals. Of course it's not an exact science- but I definitely do think that the feeling can certainly be there, if one is open to it.
