Default Invisible Pet Fence

Hi I have been using for years a invisible fence for my dog and right now it not working.

I have it set up for the front yard and back yard the two connect then connect to the power box inside the house

I am assuming there might have been a break somewhere in the line is there a way to test to see if the wire has power and what do I use?

I hate to rewire the yard because what they sale at the pet store is expensive and I have to buy several rolls since they dont make one roll long enough to cover a front and back yard.

Is there a regular wire sold at Lowes that I could subsititute that is cheaper and still does the same thing?

My dog has yet to learn it not working so she knows how far she can go without getting beep at or buzzed.
But it will only take one squirrel or deer for her to get excited and forget.

And there's the problem with the whole thing - if they want out, they'll do the "pain for gain" thing.....and it doesn't keep other animals out. I'm more concerned about someone else's idiot dog than my own...

Can you go online with the fence company and buy additional wiring?

I dont think you understand how it works the dog onced train gets a beep in the collar to warn them they are getting close to forbidden zone the zap is no stronger those practical joke buzzers that are sold at joke novelty stores.

Once they feel it one time they learn what the beeping is for and no fence is going to keep a squirrel out and I do not worry about other dogs due to leash laws.

My post isnt to discuss your issues but to find out what kind of wire or is there a way to test the current to find where the break in the wire is located.

Thanks for the tip hjlacey was the one purchased market as for pets or do you know what it was called and is their a retail outlet that also sales this wire in huge length?

Thanks for those who are posting useful information.

I thought this was helpful ??

I would not substitute wire unless it was a type recommended by the manufacturer. I'm no electrician, but electricity travels differently through different wire (type and gauge of wire).

I wasn't aware I had issues, but okey-dokey, if you say so - and leash laws only work if people with two brain cells to rub together use them in the manner they were intended, to exercise their brain. I was merely making a comment for people who might not have thought this thing through....and I WAS trying to be helpful. My idiot cousin is one who put an invisible fence up in a rural neighborhood and then couldn't figure out why a stray attacked his boxer.

Geez. Gimmee a break....

Just for the record...I very much understand how the invisible fence works...I have no issues at all with the part about using one around a garden or something, and very few issues in my life at all. Set properly, the zap is MUCH less impressive than people think. Your dog won't get zapped to the moon, but it DOES have to be set or sized properly.

No fence is going to keep a squirrel out - that's obvious - I'm sorry I didn't make myself clear. Some fences will keep some cats out, but an invisible won't - and my dogs are high prey drive toward small, fast critters - they would bust it in a heartbeat....and, as I stated, there's some idiot who is allowing their dog to roam free, or whose dog has managed to get out in spite of a good effort. Those are the ones I worry about. Not sure people pay any more attention to leash laws than littering laws sometimes.

Looks like hjlacey answered your question - I was merely making conversation and an editorial comment, which I will refrain from on your posts in the future.....I thought your backhanded slap was a little over the top. Sorry.

My fence for the dog is not working because it is beeping. I got an RF choke and hooked it up as some people said to do and got out my AM radio and went all tlhe way around the loop and the beeping of the radio never stopped. When I turned the radio on in the house it started beeping and also I could walk a good 20 feet atleast away from the wire and it still beeped. What did I do wrong?
