Guess I'll start...around age 7-8:

A gray male cat with white on the chest, in a v shape, He was so handsome. Mickie. Oh, I loved that cat.

A medium-brown dog, chihuahua/terrier mix. I would "steal" him from my brother's bed when it was "his turn" to have the dog sleep with him. Brownie, when she got old, would bury under the sofa throws to sleep...then when some unsuspecting person sat down on her, she would bite them.

Funny what we remember.

The first pet of my own was a budgie. I think Americans call them parakeets. It was white,
with a little blue patch. I loved that bird, it would sit on my shoulder and nibble my ear.
It would do little tricks like picking up coins on a table, and throwing them over the edge.
If you gave it a match stick, it would run it back and forward in it's beak. It was just so
funny. I had other budgies later in life, but none as much fun as that first one.

I had a hamster when I was six or seven - can't remember what he was called... probably Hammy, or something equally original! Then, at about age 11 I got a guinea pig called Sugar, followed by another one (Fluffy) to keep Sugar company. Fluffy only lasted a couple of years because she was asthmatic. Sugar, however, lived to be nearly 9 years old, which is ancient for a guinea pig. She was still alive when I left home, and I couldn't take her with me, so my brother reluctantly took care of her.

As far back as I can remember, at the age of 5, a kitten followed me home from school, it came from nowhere, so my mom took it in and fed him, and that was my pet, my responsibility. Yes, its amazing how back then a 5 yr old girl could walk 3 blocks to and from school without worrying about sick twisted people bothering her. These days you dont let a child outside your front yard without an armoured guard! (Figuratively speaking of course).

Well there was that first goldfish I had when I was 4. I overfed it
Then there were Angel and Tweety our parakeets. They were great. We let them have the run of flying around the house. They'd fly from their cage upstairs straight downstairs in the mornings and land on our toast. They'd let me give them a bath then fall asleep while I blow dried them nice and fluffy. Those were the parakeets that I missed. The subsequent ones, not so much.
