This is very important to my husband and I and I haven't found anything on it. I was thinking about e-mailing some of the candidates, but I really doubt that I would get anything back. Have you heard anything about any of this??
Yah, any Federal BSL laws would be a disaster, theyre more out of touch with reality than most local Governments. Richardson recently outlawd **** fighting (about time!) in NM though, which means he is trying to appeal to Animal People.

Agreed, but what about a federal law that prohibits BSL?
Actually got a response within a few hours from the Ron Paul campaign (better than the no response I got from every other campaign). It does make Dr. Paul's position clear in that he will follow the Constitution. It reads as follows:
Dr. Paul would never allow a federal breed specific ban. He would
also never allow a federal breed specific allowance. He believes that
issues like this need to be left to the states and counties. You can
rest assured that any supreme court justices that he would appoint
would follow the constitution more strictly than any others. But he
would never force the states to accept that type of federal mandate on
dogs.
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, I hope we can still count on your
support.

sorry, I know little about politics, but I believe the Boston BSL was passed under Romney's admin., though I don't know how much of an impact/say he had in it. it may be possible to go back to check the records to see what part he had in that BSL going up, if any at all.
a federal law would probably be close to impossible since it seems like a lot of cities/states have stated BSL are discriminatory. plus, the UK's Dangerous Dog Act basically flopped in terms of reducing dog bites, and also pissed off a lot of dog owners and caused headaches for the courts, so I don't know if any country would want to follow in their footsteps
The only candidate who voted against the absurd, civil-rights-infringing AETA (Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act). He is vegan and he & his wife have been lifelong supporters of very progressive animal welfare and animal rights issues.
If animal welfare issues are an important criteria for you, Kucinich is lightyears beyond any other candidate.
Does anyone know where the candidates for 2008 presidential race stand on issues like BSL or animal rights?
Good question, PBM. *I hope this thread stays open as it is VERY important to be informed on these issues*
branndon007, I'm not a bit suprised that Ron Paul's office got back to you. Nor am I suprised at the answer given.
Schmoo, is correct on Kucinich. Being from Cleveland I know where Dennis Kucinich stands on animal welfare and BSL.
Too bad others couldn't make BSL and animal welfare a priority.
