And if ghey waited and for some reason it manage to attack a person bet the headlines would read "Lazy Cops Alowes Deadly Mountain Lion to Maul Citizen". This is not a Kitty-Kitty story but one of a wild animal. The cops were correct in their actions.

Read the article and wow, talk about a baiting and misleading title in the newspaper. No, not a "baby" mountain lion but a full grown adult male. As to the eyewitnesses the OP refers to, who were those? Were you there? If not, anything you say is just armchair quarterbacking as to how appropriately it was handled. I have to believe that if there were a way to capture this mountain lion without it becoming an immediate danger to the public that Fish & Game would have done so.

Why couldn't they shoot it with a tranquilizer dart?

I just watched a program recently about a group that researches mountain lions in Colorado and they track them down then shoot them with tranquilizer darts. The cats are unharmed by this.

They tried tranquilizer darts, pepperballs, and blasting it with a fire hose, according to the article. It's very sad, but appears they did all they could to bring it in alive.

It helps to actually read the article in the OP before posting.

We dont know for sure what the cat would of done but i still believe the public servants could of handled it better. I do agree though that many cops are out of control & those cops need to be fired.

I know what a cat trapped and scared would of done. Lashed out at ANYTHING in its way. 80lbs is not a tiny cat. What should be addressed is not this dead lion but WHY the lions are coming down out of the natural habitat.

Its really amazing the damage a mountain lion can put in quite quickly. They also had no idea if it had rabies. Not all rabid animals look extremely sick. They can just do oddball stuff like wandering into the city too.

Its unfortunate he died but look at the real issue. Its not the cops. Its the lions not having enough room and food to stay away from people.
