Exclamation My tortoise... Help required.

My male tortoise seems to be 'hitting' the female and I have no clue of what to do. Is this supposed to be natural, first I thought he wanted to mate with her but it looks like he is attacking her.

So, I'm confused and I need someone to clear this for me please. I need to know what to do and I want to know why his doing that.

Our tortoises never did that, although I've seen that on video. I hope this link will help you. As far as I read, it can be ether mating or fighting.

Thanks for your reply!

I thought it was mating behavior but my one might 'hit' her on the side, not anywhere specific. That is how I got the impression he is trying to attack her.

She is smaller than him in size so I'm not sure if I should put them together to mate yet I'm worried if he is actually attacking her.

He may be trying to flip her over which in the desert is fatal.

What species? They all have very different behaviors. My sulcata 'rams' my female and for them it's part of the courtship. Aren't you glad you're not a tortoise?
