On Facebook, I've been sharing contact info of charitable organizations that are providing help to people affected by Sandy, and also wanted to include any organizations that are assisting with the animals.
So far, North Shore Animal League and Best FriendsAnimal Society are conducting relief/rescue efforts in NY and NJ. They both have lots of experience and success with disaster relief for animals.
So many of us have been making donations to help the people affected by Hurricane Sandy, but please also remember the animals when you make donations!
Many families have been displaced, and their pets need safe shelter & care until they get resettled. Also, there are lots of displaced, lost, homeless, and injured animals in the area, that may or may not be able to be reunited with their owners/families.
Please share info on any other charitable animal rescue organizations you know of that are helping in the aftermath of the hurricane.
Also, remember that you can check out any charity on guidestar.org to make sure it's a bona fide non-profit, and that it's reputable.

This is a wonderful list and idea! I would add to it Pets Alive Westchester, who I believe pulled at least 30 cats from NYC ACC so they would not be killed after the hurricane: Pets Alive Westchester :: Home
I second both Best Friends and North Shore, I am not sure how active they have been post-Sandy but know for a fact both do great work day in and day out for tri-state animals in need.
Gotcha. I prefer to give to non-governmental entities. I think the whole shelter/rescue/TNR effort is best done by private entities anyway. I like to support private organizations that link with the governmental shelter/animal control bureaus and take over the care of the animals they get.
But in this case, animal lovers should give wherever they think it would be helpful, whatever their opinion.
I don't personally give to ASPCA, since they kill animals that are not suffering, but I think with the hurricane, this is food and money that will go to animals that are not being killed. Just wanted to include it.
