Years ago I had a friend that lived in the woods and he had this great mixed breed dog. On the 4th of July he became very frightened and ran away from the house to a nearby wood mill where he was accidently hit by a vehicle of one of the workers and killed. I have known so many dogs that get freaked out by fireworks, so people should put their dogs in the house or at least the garage if they are outdoor dogs.

Very true and sad.

My dog has NO fear of fireworks, thankfully, since we used to live a few blocks from Candlestick Park. They'd set off fireworks almost weekly at the stadium, not to mention it was a bad neighborhood - so we also heard our share of gunshots. Needless to say, he just ignores those loud sounds now. But yes, for most dogs & cats this can be a terrifying holiday... so make sure the critters are safely inside!
