I'm reading Rory Stewart's book on his walk across Afghanistan back in 2002. Along the way, he adopted a dog to continue along with his walk. Over there dogs are strictly for security, killing wolves and dog fight entertainment.
In Afghanistan, dogs are considered to be unclean, and you must do ablutions to the Prophet Mohammad if you've touched a dog. These dogs are lucky to even get a mouthful of Nan Bread everyday.
The dog Rory adopted had had his ears cut off (to make him a more ferocious fighter) and he had no teeth (he had bitten someone and had his teeth knocked out with stones).
Imagine! The life of a dog over there! Let's hope that other areas of the Muslim world treats their dogs better than that, that perhaps some of these dogs get some love, affection and some pets.
One more reason to love the Muslim religion!
So if you have a dog, next time give your dog a extra big hug and rub, for the poor suffering dogs over in Afghanistan!
