My cat has been staying with a colleague of mine while I've been out of town for Christmas. Total=5 days. I just asked for someone to come feed her but he offered to have her stay at his house. I want to pay him for taking care of her, but not sure how much would be appropriate (if it helps, we are both teachers who make between $40 and $50k). Suggestions?
My pet sitter charges $25 for a 30 minutes visit (for cats). I think she might have different rates for dogs, but I've never paid attention as I only have cats.
She feeds/waters, deals with litter box, grooms the cats (they're longhairs and need daily brushing), plays with them, and also brings in my mail. If I'm out of town for a longer period of time, I arrange to have her come twice a day or for a longer visit.
We have friends sit our two dogs for "free" if it's a couple of days, but I always get them a $50 gift certificate to their favorite restaraunt when we return. They keep taking the dogs...
We have a gal at church that "house sits" and takes care of the dogs if we are gone a week or more. We pay her $300 per week, but that is a more formal arrangement than with our friends. She feeds the dogs, walks them twice a day, and sleeps at the house so the dogs know a person is about.
Cats are much more self contained and more independant than dogs, so checking on them every other day and making sure they have water and food is usually enough - i.e. it should be some what cheaper than dogs, because it can be much less time consuming than dogs.
I would agree with most other posters that ~$100 is reasonable and would likley result in your friend keeping your cats for future travel, etc.
