WENTZVILLE, Mo. (KSDK) -- When you're a police officer, you need to be ready for anything. But a couple of officers in St. Charles County couldn't prepare for this.

Saturday morning, two Wentzville police officers were stopped by a man asking for directions to Animal Talk, an animal medical center in Wentzville. The man then told the officers to look in the back of his car.

I don't know how good a pet they make but you can make a Cat O Matic to feed them. There was a guy in Austin, Texas that kept one in his backyard in warm weather. The cage had a big pool and it was made of cyclone fence. On the top of the enclosure was a swinging trap door. This guy would put cat food on this trap door. Then sometimes at night he would hear a big splash, then a lot of splashing. Then, silence.

I have a sort of a dry land alligator. A Water Monitor lizard, 6 feet long. She does have her own pool, but no Cat O Matic.

keeping alligators, big cats and other wild animals are about ego and nothing else. almost all of these types of people don't have any education on how to care for these animals or what to feed them to keep them healthy as evident by elk wallow's post about the cat-o-matic. I find these people despicable

Alligators eat live food and carrion. The Cat O Matic guy knew what he was doing, it had grown quite large on 'health food'.

the crock might eat cat, dog, and the like that doesn't mean that is what it eats in the wild under "normal" circumstance. people who keep exotics that do not have the education to care for them properly are doing it for their own ego, most certainly not the animals welfare.

it was enough work to keep a 20 gallon fish tank clean. I'd hate to have to keep an alligator pond clean.

No. An alligator does not make a good pet. No wild predator makes a good pet. That is why there are so few domesticated species; the list of animals who tolerate close human presence peacefully is quite short. For all others, we are either predator or prey, and that's all they see we are.

Affection, in whatever form it takes, is restricted to members of their own kind alone. Only domesticated animals have the ability for affection directed to other species. That's why a wild animal may hang out with a dog or house cat sometimes, but never a wolf or a leopard.
