a long time ago, I used to have one made by Hartz, which I bought from Woolworth's (god, this was like in the 90's, seems like ages ago!). it was the kind meant to be attached to those Habitrail type of cages w/ tubes. it was a piece of crap truthfully and my hamster hated it! a LOT of hamster cages and toys are more geared towards dwarf hamsters, not Syrians (I swear, Syrians are being bred bigger nowadays. I've seen some rat sized ones in stores!).
anyways, I made a maze from scratch using cardboard boxes and duct tape. I went to a bookstore and bought one of those activity books they make for kids, the ones w/ mazes, riddles, crosswords and what not (I believe the book I bought was called The Big Book of Fun) and just used one of the mazes as a floor plan. it turned out great, even had bridges and tunnels! of course it got destroyed after a while, but a more permanent option could be made using sealed wood.
ETA: you could also google "printable mazes" and use those as floor plans
A friend of mine has a Syrian. We searched the internet for easy-to-make cages (because his fatty Syrian was too big for anything store-bought) and found this site:
At the bottom, there are 2 options for Syrians. My friend got a large glass tank with a dish rack platform, bird ladder, and wheel. He also tried putting empty paper towel rolls (like a mini-tunnel) in the cage, but the hamster always chewed it up fast.
