Currently, four mutts and a beagle. One mutt I got as a puppy, the others were all older adoptions. No more puppies for me- i actually have a nice house now, plus, I have no idea how to raise puppies!
With older dogs, you can have more- they are less wild, need less. I have a large fenced yard and the five are ages 7-12.
The most I've had was six, until the famous Ezra died in March at age 17. Love those heelers!
For me, the ideal number is probably four. I'm holding off on any more changes for now, because when my 12-year-old's brother died last year, there was sudden aggression in two others because of jockeying for top dog slot. As it is, my two larger dogs have to sleep separately unless I'm there to rule the roost. I wouldn't want to expose my 12-year-old to any more trouble than he's already had, although... if the right rescue came along...
1 Great Dane and one Siamese kitten. Live with my daughter and her 4 dogs and 9 cats all of our animals are rescues. I miss my parrots and my horse since moving here to TX so am seeking other pet lovers for friendship.
