No, I haven't taken it that far. I told my instructor tonight that I thought I wanted to find a horse to lease in Spring '09. Maybe I will talk to some of my horse friends and see if anyone has a free lease - although we don't live in an area zoned for horses, there are places close enough that are.

Thanks for all of your support and encouragement.

Do your friends let you ride their horses?

I only know these people casually and they are from the barn and a couple at work who have horses. I'm going to ask them to keep an ear open for a free lease and see what comes back. Nobody has offered to let me ride their horses and I haven't asked.

You guys have inspired me. I am going to email some of the horse people I know and tell them that I am looking for a free lease or somebody who wants a trail buddy and has multiple horses. I'll let you know what I find!

I am enjoying all this chatting so I would love to keep this thread going regarding choosing a horse and even caring for it.

My first horse came off of a Dude String...she was a six year old pure bred quarter horse that had worked on a ranch and was broke to death and the perfect cattle horse...but she had somehow foundered and had an "elf" hoof so she would come up lame with the hard use of a cowhorse.

We bought her for $200...I found an amazing ferrier who knew precisely how to pad and shoe her bad hoof and from that day on "Babe" was the perfect horse! I used her for endurance, barrel racing, trail riding...you name it. She was a stocky, barrel chested brown mare with a rump as big as Cleveland and a heart to match! The most amazing horse I have ever ridden...I loved her fiercely until her death at 22 from cancer.

Essecue Babe sounds like a wonderful horse! Some people wouldn't have taken the time to work with her special needs and get her sound, but you did and what a difference it made for both of you. I would love to see a picture of her if you are able to post one! Thanks for sharing the information.

I would have to scan an old photo...it's been 25 years! (I am kind of old )...but I can try. She was just a plain brown horse (not a bay) with a rather scroungey black mane and tail and a small white star. I have had other horses since Babe but never one with such heart and soul.

She sounds beautiful! If you can scan it great, if not, no worries! I think brown horses get overlooked all the time. Moon, one of my lesson horses was brown with some socks and a star and snip was the sweetest boy and I though he was so handsome!

BTW I have a friend at work who is going to ask some of her friends with horses if any of them would be willing to do a free lease. She and her friends own gaited horses. I've never ridden a gaited horse - any thoughts?
