Volunteer Work for a NJ Animal Shelter......
I have a friend that wants to do volunteer work with dogs at a shelter. He's allergic to cats so it would be limited to dogs. I doubt he can handle cleaning out the cages also, if you know what I mean. Are there other things to help with the dogs, maybe walking, bathing, feeding, and just being a friend? Do shelters need volunteers for administrative work? I know I can get some good feedback from the posts I've read, you guys know your stuff about pets, Thanks.

I think it depends on the size and scope of the shelter's programs. Many shelters need dogwalkers and people to play with and socialize the dogs. Others may need help with filing, copying and administrative tasks. The best thing to do would be to call or visit local shelters to find out in person about what opportunities exist at each. I'm sure there is something for your friend to do!

Thanks for your post, with the amount of replies I received (1), maybe I should be in the NJ Forum??? Wasn't sure.

I volunteer and walk dogs, help with fundraisers and all. Just go to a training day and see all they have to offer or call shelter thinking of and see what they need for volunteers and explain cannot be near cats.

Before moving to San Diego, I volunteered at an animal shelter in NJ. I walked the dogs, which is what they most needed help with.

Thanks for the feedback. I thought maybe once you volunteer, you're open to whatever. I don't think I can clean out the stalls if there is duty there. I can do other things, is what I'm getting from the posts. I can walk the dogs, and just be company for them. I'd like that. I like the affection and companionship most dogs give.
