Default Is Deter safe to use? Poopy eating problem here

I have two puppy shih tzus. One is particularly fond of poop. What I have done for a few days now is to give them these Deter pills so their poop tastes less yummy. It seems to be working, near as I can tell. However, I am wondering if it's safe? I mean, eating poopy cannot exactly be healthy?

Coprophagia is a really gross habit...but really common. We had the problem with a Golden pup once.
Here is some more info on the Deter:
Deter - 1800PetMeds.com
You basically have to break the habit....I found that most pups outgrow it....But the Deter does work..I believe we used it for about 2 weeks...no side effects

Thanks, I think it might be working a little, but I have been concerned about any health affects. If they only need it for a couple of weeks, that will be great!

One of the dog training shows suggested feeding some chunks of fresh pineapple to to a dog to make its poop unpalatable. She also suggested that the dogs diet was too high in protein, which is why it found the poop so appealing.

That may very well be, but young pups who are still nursing on their mothers are even known to do this.

True. It was also mentioned in the tv show that mommy dogs eat the poo of the puppies to keep the nesting area clean. So it's a habit that the pups can pick up on.

I've seen Cesar Millan (the dog whisperer) cure dogs of this. He says it's often something lacking in their diet, a vitamin, mineral, etc. He uses fruits like bananas for potassium deficiency. Apparently, the dogs will go after the fruit that addresses their deficiency.

Cat poop is even better, according to my dog. It ranks much better than dog food, and is actually #1, just above compost. She doesn't seem interested in dog, horse, or cow poop, all of which she regularly encounters.

Might it work to feed Deter to my cats?

Maybe the banana will work. An old black peel was the latest item shimmied out of the compost bin.

1. Cat Poop
2. Compost
3. Cat Food
...
...
....
58. Dog Food
