Aween...thanks for the advice.. I also called a local woman who is active with petfinder ( I think) she is into rescue and has a petfinder sticker on her bumper. I will surely let you know how it goes..I think I will call while at work tomorrow as the kids are carrying around pics of puppy already and wonder whatis up. I want to do the right thing and rescue but it may become easier to buy. sheesh !!!

I am a big advocate for rescue and adoption but sometimes these rescue places make it next to impossible to adopt.
I am getting ready to adopt also, and the people have a very long application to fill out. They need to talk to my vet and I have to give friends names. They need to do a in-house inspection. They want me to feed the dog only what they feed. They want to talk to my mother who will babysit the dog if and when we ever go on a vacation. They also need to know about every single dog I have ever had. (what did they die of,vet records, how old were they when they died...ect...) Oh also want to know about our working hours and call my boss to verify the hours that my husband and work.
I know they want to adopt out a dog to the right family, but I think this rescue shelter is going a bit overboard. I am waiting for them to ask me for my SS# fingerprints, any arrests and bank statements.
It seems buying a dog is so much less of a hassle. But I really don't want to buy from a breeder.

Luckily in San Antonio we have several places you can visit and adopt a pet or put you name on a list for a type of pet. I got my got my Tonkanese Cat from local humane shelter.
I would hate to think those people gave the puppy away while you were trying to adopt it. I would ask them to be upfront and honest with you about the adoption and the problem. Remind them how much they are stressing your children with anticipation.
Not a good sign in my book. Reminds of the run around we got when we adopted a Greyhound from local rescue service they lied about the history of the dog several times even when we pointed out the lie. Never trusted that group ever again. Luckily they no longer are a viable group.
I hope all goes better for you and your children.

We went through Best Friends and they did do the home inspection etc. But its been smooth sailing ever since.
Would use them again

I don't think petfinder itself is the agency adopting out the animal. If your contact person is bein difficult, find out what organization the animal belongs to, and contact someone else within it. Please don't give up, and I am sorry to hear whoever you are working with is being difficult. Home visits and many questions are standard; I know it's annoying but I would guesstimate from my experience that anywhere from 10% - 20% of adopted animals are brought back to the rescue group within a months' time. The many questions and home visits are to try to reduce the risk of that happening. Once you have the pet, you can feed it whatever you want!

Default Found my Jazzy on petfinder

My Jazzy (an akita/malamute mix) came from petfinder. I'm in mass and she was in RI (about 3 hours away). I wanted to adopt another dog so my parker (a malamute/shepard mix) would have a playmate. Parker and I drove to the animal shelter in RI. We spent probably 2 hours visiting with Jazzy and the owners of the shelter. The two dogs got along just fine so I filled out the application which included references. Went back two weeks later with hubby and parker so the shelter owners could meet hubby, answered even more questions about us, our home, how we trained our dog and what activities we did with him, all kinds of stuff. The shelter almost didn't want to adopt jazzy to us because they couldn't perform an in-house inspection because of the driving distance but because the director at our local shelter (who we used as a reference and where we adopted parker from) highly recommended us as being fit adoptive parents the RI shelter waived the visit and gave us the thumbs up to adopt. On our third visit Jazzy came home.

Jazzy's a wonderful addition to our family. I highly recommend looking for a pet on petfinder.
