Does anyone else have a problem with fruit flies around their gp cages? They started invading the begining of the summer. I always take out the old fruit and veggies, but they always seem to hang around. I read some where that once the fruit flies are around they will lay their eggs in the bedding of the cage. And that is all it takes! So I hunted for a way to get rid of them. I have tried a lot of different things. There are two things that seem to work the best. When it is really bad and they are bothering Lupe, I have to get out the vacuum or my hair dryer. I either vac them up or I hold the hair dryer backwards and zap them. I only do this when they are overwhelming. The other thing I learned was to take a glass and put a piece of fruit ( the sweeter the better, they love peaches) in it. Then put a piece of plastic wrap over the top, sealed really tightly. Put an elastic around the plastic wrap at the top and then use a fork to poke holes in the wrap. This way the flies go in for the fruit but they can't get back out. I have filled many many glasses of them! I usually put the full glass in the sink and with the wrap still on it, fill the glass with water. I know it sounds cruel but I haven't been able to find any other way of getting rid of them! Hopefully now with the colder weather coming I won't have to worry about it much longer.
How To Get Rid Of Fruit Flies : TipNut.com <-- homemade non-toxic fruit fly traps you can keep near your GP cage so they get trapped and killed in these traps and dont harass your GPs or their cage anymore.
Also, fruit flies like moisture....I would sprinkle baking soda at the bottom of your cage before you put fresh bedding down, it will help absorb the urine better to not only dry faster, but also eliminate odor that may attract them.
