Now that I read this I'm glad I put offf my decision to have Mike PTS. They said they would do an innjection into the kidney, it says in the article quoted this is unacceptable and painful.
I had a cat PTS about 10 years ago, they did an inter cardiac injection because they couldn't find a vein. They did have her sedated first, but I will never know if she felt pain or not.
I will never euthanaize an animal again. what's wrong with plain old death? My cat is being kept comfortable, on pain meds, treating his various conditions. Death will come when it does, just like for humans.
I'm tormented even now thinking they hurt her, my little baby, she was sick, comatose, I rushed her to an ER clinic and requestee euthanasia, she had been sick a long time. I told myself I was doing the right thing. Now, 10 years later, I'm tormented thinking her last moments were of agony. I can't do that again. I have enough guilt on my conscious. They hurt her! I won't let them hurt Mike.
Face it, we do euthanasia for our sake, not the animal's. We get tired of caring for them, tired of the bills, tired of the expense and time. So then we kill them and tell ourselves its the ultimate act of love. Bull****! We euthansize because we don't care anymore.
Mike will die when nature takes him. In the meantime I will keep him comfortable. I don't need the additional torment of another pet killed.

I've never heard of euthanasia solution being injected into the kidney.
I'm sorry that Mike is sick. I hope you are able to keep him comfortable.

Well, we may have to have him PTS, but at least buy some time to research the methods. Our last cat was PTS by IV, after heavy sedation. I hope he went peacefully. I can't abide the thought of having it done this way, into the kidney, they also said it could take about 10-20 min. My last cat was gone in about one min after injecting the IV.
We have bought some time for Mike, lets use it to advantage. Why bother with euthanasia if its going to cause suffering? Isn't that what we're trying to avoid?

I've never had a pet put to sleep, or die from old age. As a child, all of our dogs were hit by cars, stolen, one got rabies (but I was too young to remember). My oldest cat is 15 and i've had her for her entire life, she was the first pet that was 'mine'. I have two other cats and two dogs, the only other cat i've had is one that got eaten by a coyote at my parents farm, a week before I was going to move them to an apartment. I'll never have an outdoor cat again.
I know it will be hard, but I can at least take comfort in the fact that I gave my pets a good life that isn't going to end in a violent death. I'm thankful to know that I should look into the various methods when the time arises, but if I put my cat to sleep it certainly won't be because I don't care about her anymore.

I am very happy to read that Mike is doing better. I hope that you have lots of good quality time left together.
The most humane method is euthanasia solution injected into a vein. Done properly there is no pain associated with this other than perhaps the needle stick. With most pets, an IV catheter is preferred to make sure the solution goes only in the vein. In an extreme case, you can go for the heart if the pet is anesthetized or heavily sedated. But the kidney makes absolutely no sense.
I'm trying to stay calm and reasonable, but this thread really upsets me. If I had a vet who proposed injecting euthanasia solution into a kidney, that person would never touch any of my pets again.

All of my pets, and there have been a lot in over 40 yrs of owning dogs and cats, with one exception who died at home, have been PTS with an IV injection into a vein in the leg. The first dose puts them into a coma and the second dose stops their heart. That way they don't feel anything - trust me, I have held their paw for every one of them, except 2 who had to go while I was out of town.

I am the one who originally started this thread a few months ago. We ended up having to have our precious furbaby euthanized a few weeks ago,but believe me it wasn't for our sake....it was totally for her. Not having her euthanized would have been more for us,but we wouldn't have been prolonging her life.....only her death. She had fought and suffered long enough and had no quality of life left. It had nothing to do with being tired of taking care of her,the expense or time. She was given the very best of care in every way for over 18 years. We wanted with all of our hearts for her to die naturally. As a matter of fact,I personally didn't think it was our place to take her life and it was the hardest thing I have ever had to do. However,it would have been harder and cruel to watch her struggle and suffer until the end. I had been fortunate enough up until now to not be faced with that choice and decision. We had a vet come to our home and it was in no way painful for her. It was very calm and peaceful for her. We helped her cross over to the Rainbow Bridge with the dignity, kindness, and love that she so highly deserved. It was truly our last and ultimate act of love and we cared VERY deeply. DON'T EVER SAY IT WAS BECAUSE WE DIDN'T CARE OR WAS TIRED OF CARING FOR HER AND THE EXPENSE!!
