Amazingly, this is quite a common occurence, although here in FL., our miracle stories have to do with dogs escaping alligators!

A number of years ago we lived in S. Idaho and had a little red Daschund. Down the road a ways there was an owl nest with babies leaving the nest. One day we were out walking around and my dog ran ahead a little ways to look around. You do not hear these birds of prey at all as they make no noise in flight. My dog was sniffing around this little building being built with no roof on it yet. In broad daylight one of these baby owls swoops over and was right above her looking down at her. We began yelling and running towards it and it ran away. The dog was oblivious to the bird. I believe to this day if it had been one of the parents she would have been killed. The baby just sat there turning its head from one direction to the other trying to figure this dog out.

Poor fur babies, indeed! And it sometimes happens right in front of you!
I had a friend whose Jack Russell was taken (in front of her). Fortunately, the dog was taken under for 30 seconds but then popped back up. After surgery at the vet's, her fur baby lives!
Owls sort of pale in comparison
