I have two rabbits that are inside buns. For kids I think the larger rabbits might be better...they are a little tougher and easier to handle. I discourage rabbits for young kids but yours are old enough to understand how to treat them, ie. not to get frsutrated if they don't want to be picked up (many rabbits are this way - its natural for small prey animals to be uncomfortable being picked up). Be sure you understand what you are getting into...they take more work than animals like cats, but they are wonderful companions. But I work at a wildlife hospital and see the annual "Easter dump" of buns about a month or so later when people decide they don't really want them. That's how I got mine - they were rescues from Easter throwaways. And they have turned out to be wonderful pets.
Also I note that someone above suggested you not get a male and a female because you will have lots of babies. Rabbits can - and should - be neutered. All of my rabbits (male and female) have been neutered without any problems.
